A late afternoon smoke break

This project was definitely not a breeze for me. Unlike the last project, I was not familiar with the software we were using. Audition was not too hard to navigate, but I definitely had to go back to the tutorials a lot while making my sounds. My piece is called “A late afternoon smoke break” because that is exactly where you are going to be transported when listening to this sound. The beginning of this sound I play someone rolling a joint and then they go outside, by using the door opening and closing sounds. Then they light the joint and smoke. After this beginning scene, things get very calm and serene. The rest of the song is full of leaves crunching, crickets chirping, people riding their bike by, streams of water flowing, people’s breath, and every now and then a moment of silence. All of these sounds are supposed to make you feel as if you just ended your day and you have no more worries other than to just enjoy your calm moment outside. I thought it was important to add in a few moments of silence throughout the journey to reiterate what Cage wanted us to remember: there is no such thing as silence. If you pictured yourself walking through nature and there was silence at any moment, then your brain starts talking to itself, or you watch a bird fly by, or see motion in the distance. Your brain rarely lets you enjoy the silence, unless you tell it to. Stay present my little hippies.
