Reading Blog Post #1

Writer: Ellen BurginEllen Burgin

This reading makes me think about my own brain and how I react to certain images. Our vision is always surrounded by images. Modernally, we are looking at images online ALL the time. It is either through a computer screen, a tv screen, an iphone screen, etc. We are surrounded by screens all the time (well majority of this world is). A statement that interested me from the reading was “Living in an image rich world…does not mean students (or faculty and administrators) naturally possess sophisticated visual literacy skills, just as continually listening to an iPod does not teach a person to critically analyze or create music”. This is very true, there is so much we can absorb from the internet, but true talent comes from the heart and hard work. The only way to have visual literacy skills is through talent, education, and/or persistence even though our minds are so full of images. There are so many senses that need to be used to master certain visual skills and that is not being utilized when just scrolling/staring at a screen. Something I have been realizing recently is that I have been dreaming about a phone screen/various screens and images I would see online. This is very interesting because this is new for me. Images are starting to take over my brain even though I have an average screen time of under 2 hours. I think of this as an opportunity to use these visions of visions and turn them into new visions! A proactive way to utilize our crazy subconscious.
